Nostalgic Gaming Music Trip Episode 1: Goin' Bananas

Music is such an integral part of games. It creates a rich atmosphere and transports us to whatever virtual pixelated world we explored. It provides the emotional anchor and give the game a foundational soul and environment from which to build upon. But it was something about those oldschool tunes that really had a soul to them; a charming and enchanting melody of “beeps” and “boops” that somehow most modern gaming music cannot touch. Perhaps since the game developers of the past were much more limited in the tools at their disposal in creating game music, they decided to go all out and create the greatest music they damn well could to compensate for the poor quality and limited assets.

In this segment of my Retro corner, I will show that they did a damn good job of this, creating audio tracks that truly show that you do not need technology to create something memorable and enjoyable.  Each week I will post an old classic gaming music piece that we cherished as much as the game itself. Why stick with purely nostalgic tunes? Well, besides the fact that they tend to be superior, the music is quite often the very “soul” of our games, and so to are they the soul of those nostalgic feelings that transport us back to our youths. Music is a moment in time which captures for us a vivid image of our past. So what better way to bring us back that with games we spent a great portion of our youth hunched over our couches playing with a Mario soda in hand?

The first piece comes from the classic sidescroller that gave Mario a run for his money, known as Donkey Kong Country 2. It is a soothing and relaxing piece of music that paradoxically plays during your intense journeys through countless perils such as giant killer bees, hungry vultures, and giant mazes of thorns. So enjoy the serenading melody:
